This show is produced by The Scooby-Doo! Studio.

Characters[]

Mystery Inc./The Missing Link[]

Scooby-Doo (Voiced by Frank Welker)[]

Scoobert “Scooby” Doo is the Great Dane mascot of Mystery Inc., and pet and best friend of Shaggy Rogers. When Mystery Inc. gets in a scrape, his treat of choice is Scooby Snacks, which allows him to shapeshift into a ball or a rocketship. In “The Missing Link”, Scooby’s instrument of choice are the drums. His catchphrase is "Scooby-Dooby-Doo!".

Fred Jones (Voiced by Frank Welker)[]

Fred Jones is an athletic, handsome, blonde-haired young man who is the band’s guitar player and level-headed leader who leads every supernatural mission and books every subsequent gig. His main catchphrase is “Great Scott!”, a quote taken from Dr. Emmett Brown from the “Back to the Future" franchise.

Daphne Blake (Voiced by Grey DeLisle)[]

Daphne Blake is a red-haired young woman who plays the tambourine for The Missing Link. She is attractive and beautiful, but has displayed many abilities of self-defense, such as having a black belt in karate. For example, Daphne is also a fierce warrior, charging into battle, a la Xena - Warrior Princess, and taking great offense if anyone who's not her friend calls her a princess, at which point she exclaims, "They call me “Miss Princess”!"—a reference to Sidney Poitier's line "They call me “Mister Tibbs”!" from the 1967 film In the Heat of the Night.

Velma Dinkley (Voiced by Mindy Cohn)[]

Velma Dinkley is a young woman with short brown hair and square glasses who plays the organ for The Missing Link. The brains of the group, she is Fred’s second-in-command. Although a skilled scientologist and inventor, she still has a feeling of distrust for other people and will often outright insult and claim that their bad puns do not make her happy even though she is obviously happy about it, she starts to do the "Dirty Old Man" dance (inspired by famous Japanese comedian Ken Shimura). Though also a driver for the Mystery Machine, Velma sometimes shouts “Banzai!” and pulls out a bonsai tree to trim a branch before driving the Mystery Machine.

Shaggy Rogers (Voiced by Matthew Lillard)[]

Norville “Shaggy” Rogers is a young man who plays bass for The Missing Link. His catchphrase is crying out “Zoinks!” whenever he gets scared by a villain. Shaggy is Scooby-Doo’s best friend. Unlike his will to fight back in the film, “Scooby-Doo! Legend of the Phantosaur”, Shaggy has incredible strength, given his diminutive stature and unassuming looks and personality, but it would usually be reserved for when he was upset (with a few rare exceptions, where he would very easily move his adversary beforehand, but without harming him), and then he would monotone: "You know what? That makes me mad", prior to tossing the hapless villain of the piece over his head many times.

Major Characters[]

Vincent Van Ghoul (Voiced by Maurice LaMarche)[]

Mentor to Mystery Inc., who also operates as commissioner for the FBI (short for the Federal Bureau of Investigation). Van Ghoul specializes in the use of disguises in order to pass on a message containing Mystery Inc's briefing for their next message, a frequent plot element used at the beginning of each episode, as well as seeing them towards the end to congratulate them on a job well done, presenting them with the criminal bounty on their paycheck, but not before ordering his henchmen to take away the criminal by saying his catchphrase, “Take him/her/’em away, boys!”.

The following places of hiding (in Shaggleford Manor) and disguising are listed below:

  • Episode 1 – Not hidden and no disguises
  • Episode 2 – Trash can
  • Episode 4 – Refrigerator
  • Episode 5 – Old man on a bench
  • Episode 6 – Millard duck (from Shaggleford Manor’s golf course)
  • Episode 7 – Vase
  • Episode 8 – Oven
  • Episode 9 – Man-crab
  • Episode 10 – Velma’s organ
  • Episode 11 – Megasport Sport Palace steward
  • Episode 12 – Swimming pool (in a tugboat)
  • Episode 13 – Through the front door (w/ no disguises)

Robi (Voiced by Eric Idle)[]

Robi is a multi-gadgeted robotic butler, willed to Mystery Inc. by his late uncle, Dr. Albert Shaggleford. He is a polite service robot that always tries his best to please Scooby-Doo and the gang while they are at home or on a mystery-solving mission.

Arsenal[]

U-Watch[]

The U-Watch is a high-tech watch-like device and the primary prop object used by Mystery Inc., containing multiple mini-gadgets for each mission. This is a piece of equipment that is an essential part on their missions and is also the way they are usually paged to the FBI.

According to the FBI, the "U"; stands for Utility, since many of its gadgets are utility items. Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy are the only ones to wear them since they are based on their signature color schemes. The primary functions are:

  • Legendex: A database of every monster, curse, creature, and event worthy of note known to man.
  • Slime Scan: Analyzes slime samples if it is of unknown origin.
  • Bio Scan: Analyzes any item including biological residue and sends information on the FBI’s database.
  • X-Rod: Fires a net or an energy field to capture a creature. It can also extend into a quarterstaff (like Sun Wukong’s staff) for melee combat.
  • I-Cutter: Creates an energy blade that cuts through walls, locks, and doors; it has also been shown to shoot concentrated “laser blasts” on occasion. Like the X-Rod, it is the only other weapon capable of actual melee or ranged fighting.
  • Virtual Tracer: Has a GPS system that can used to trace down people or objects.
  • Turbo Bungee: A grappling hook that enables the wearer to escape from confined spaces.
  • Alpha Goggles: A pair of glasses with internal light beams mounted at the rims, perfect for viewing in enclosed or dark locations.
  • U-Shield: Generates a forcefield that can cover from an area to an entire room. It also acts as an air supply for limited durations underwater.
  • Phone Number Search Mode: The U-Watch’s A.I. responds with an address and name when the user states a phone number.
    • It should have been noted that the 'unofficial' functions include an internal flashlight communications device, and even a laser/blaster function which is really rarely used. On one occasion, it's shown that the U-Watch has a slot for what looks like memory cards and allows it to run additional programs from them. Interestingly enough, it has never been verified that the U-Watch actually tells the time.
  • Laser Gun: It shoots out lasers with a touch of one button like a taser.

Mystery Machine[]

The Mystery Machine is a super-vehicle owned by Mystery Inc. that could turn into any mode of transportation conceivable.

Exterior[]

The design of the Mystery Machine is similar as the Lenco BearCat armored tactical “S.W.A.T.” vehicle, but it is painted in green with the FBI logos on the front and back doors.

Interior[]

The interior has black and has a GPS that the driver can reach his/her destination with. Velma has the driver’s seat, while Fred sits next to her. The rest of the team (which concludes Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo) sit at the locking bench seats directly behind the driver and passenger seats, with storage on the inside.

There is also a set of buttons of use for either changing it to a different form or feature, similar to the Mach 5 or James Bond, including:

  • Red – turns into a submarine or boat.
  • Blue – turns into a tunneling boring machine.
  • Yellow – turns into a jet-plane.
  • Green – turns into a truck (default).

Premise[]

Mystery Inc. (consisting of Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, Shaggy Rogers, and Scooby-Doo) has just graduated from high school to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation (long for “FBI”) to combat crime across the globe, with each mission focused on solving supernatural-based mysteries in a foreign locale, where the villains (the ghosts and monsters) were always revealed as criminals in masks and costumes. Their vast knowledge of the supernatural and their remarkable intuition make them valued agents of the FBI, leading double lives as a secret crime fighting team working for the United States Government and a popular garage-rock band, The Missing Link.

Almost every episode of the series follows a detailed and set formula, with little variation. The main concept of the formula is as follows.

  1. The gang is lounging at their home, Shaggleford Manor, with some doing something together or independently when their home phone rings, which is identified as the Mystery Hotline. Once the rest of the gang is summoned, Fred answers the call; the call consists mostly of the following conversation: “Is that you, Commissioner? You’re where? Right away, Commissioner."
  2. The gang rendezvouses with the commissioner of the FBI, Vincent Van Ghoul, who is usually either hiding or in disguise thanks to his old illusion tricks; he presents them a brief containing their assignment to solve a worsening monster problem that will soon arise in a foreign country or state, which ends with a postscript saying, "this message will self-destruct.". The gang accepts the mission, usually with Fred’s exclamation, “Don’t worry, Commissioner, Mystery Inc. is on the job.”; Fred then crumples the message up and tosses it back to Vincent, apparently forgetting the self-destruct warning. The message soon blows up in Vincent’s face, after which he usually asks himself, “why do I put up with them?”
  3. The gang then immediately rides down, via roller coaster, to the Mystery Cave, their underground base of operations situated under Shaggleford Manor, where they equip themselves with various selected gadgets that they should use on each mission, jump into the Mystery Machine (a super-vehicle that could turn into any mode of transportation conceivable), and then speed into the fray against assorted evildoers.
  4. Once they arrive at the site of the monster problem, the gang interviews numerous victims over what they know about the villain. Then, they split up to cover ground for the monster, some crime scenes, and/or some clues.
  5. Eventually, thanks to Velma’s Legendex, a database of every monster, curse, creature, and/or event worthy of note known to man, enough clues are found to discover the villain’s masterplan and/or purpose, convincing the gang to figure out how to thwart that plan and capture the target. Fred then develops a Rube-Goldberg-styled trap to capture it, but the villain itself knows their game, and a big fight ensues consequently as the gang scrambles to bring down the monster with force.
  6. Eventually, the monster is apprehended and/or discovered to be disguised. Once unmasked, the monster turns out to be a disgruntled individual who has been wronged in some form during their past. After revealing his/her plot for revenge on those who wronged him/her (by using the monster's costume to cover up his crime), the offender concludes his/her confession with a quote, "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids, and your talking dog.", and is then taken away to the United States Penitentiary’s Administrative Maximum Facility (long for “USP Florence ADMAX”) by the FBI, with Commissioner Van Ghoul then showing up again to congratulate the gang for completing their mission, awarding them with the criminal’s bounty in exchange of his/her arrest.
  7. After their mission is over, the gang is allowed to perform at a booked local theatre, stadium, coliseum, restaurant, or other venues of interest with a song with the problem and solution incorporated into the lyrics under the alter-ego garage rock band name, “The Missing Link”.

Educational Lessons and Songs[]

During each episode, Mystery Inc. should deal with an issue or problem commonly faced by children in a more serious theme, including vandalism, stealing, racism, rape, smoking, being scammed by con artists, sexually transmitted diseases, child abuse, kidnapping, drug use, gun violence and death.

At the end of each episode, the Missing Link would sing a song about the theme of the day. This sequence, similar to those seen in “The Archie Show”, should often been parodied.

Running Gags[]

  • The most important running gag that appears in every episode (except Episode 13) is the exploding message sent to Mystery Inc. by FBI Commissioner Vincent Van Ghoul. After the message blows up in his face, he laments a quote over the following. Each quote should be said in each episode on the list below:
    • Episode 1 – “Oh, why do I put up with him?”
    • Episode 2 – “No more for me, thanks—I’m driving.”
    • Episode 4 – “Check please, waiter.”
    • Episode 5 – “And I say he does have to shoot me now.”
    • Episode 6 – “There are…four lights…”
    • Episode 7 – “Goombas ate my lunch, my dear plumber.”
    • Episode 8 – “Don’t do it, Annie—I have the higher ground, Annie!”
    • Episode 9 – “Quoth the Raven: “Nevermore.””
    • Episode 10 – “Don’t worry, Mama will fix this!”
    • Episode 11 – “Ho-ho and ha-ha—to laugh it is.”
    • Episode 12 – “One dose of roses.”
  • Another important gag is the Missing Link’s fan club; wherever Mystery Inc. goes, their fans will mistake them for their garage band alter ego, “The Missing Link”, and will give chase just to try and tear their clothes off for souvenirs, but to no avail due to Scooby and the gang’s escape from every crazy paparazzi.
  • In Fred’s office, there are two levers on one of the office walls; one lever sets off one of Fred’s monsters traps, and the other lever reveals a roller coaster car that speeds down to the Mystery Cave. When Fred orders for a lever to be pulled, Shaggy triggers one of the monster traps in the process, hence “Wrong lever!” is often stated in response to the action. Fred is the only victim of these unpleasant actions listed below:
    • Episode 1 – opening a shark pit, causing Fred to fall in it.
    • Episode 2 – releasing a giant anvil from the ceiling above, flattening Fred.
    • Episode 4 – the levers aren’t working, forcing Mystery Inc. to take the stairs.
    • Episode 6 – releasing a lion from its cage to gobble up Fred.
    • Episode 7 – releasing a cage from the ceiling above, trapping Fred.
    • Episode 8 – releasing a mace, which rips all of Fred’s clothes.
    • Episode 9 – setting off the burglar alarm (freaking out Robi).
    • Episode 10 – releasing a boxing glove on a spring, punching Fred in the face thus knocking him out.
    • Episode 12 – triggers a spooky mask to pop up from behind Fred’s desk, startling the gang.
    • Episode 13 – drops a pile of suitcases and Mystery Inc.’s belongs for their vacation on Fred.
  • Whenever Daphne becomes upset over seeing an uncomfortable display of unpleasant actions, she would pull out her iPhone and bring up her YouTube video which shows a Brazilian helicopter pilot asking her, “Come, fly with me, gatinha.”.

Notes[]

  • Fred Jones reading Commissioner Vincent Van Ghoul’s messages should be an animation sequence recycled from “Hotel Mario”, where Mario reads a note from his archenemy, Bowser. The Commissioner with the message blown up in his face should also be an animation sequence recycled from a Nintendo DS video game, “Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck”, where Daffy Duck quotes non-sequitur lines from levels 1 to 9 of a minigame called, “Exploding Piano”, before collapsing onto the floor (after the piano blows up in his face at the end of each level).
  • Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy summoning their mini-gadgets from their U-Watches should be an animation sequence recycled from “Martin Mystery”, where Martin Mystery summons one of his gadgets from his U-Watch.
  • Scenes where the Missing Link band plays should all be frame-by-frame replacements for looped frames originally seen of the Junkyard Gang on “Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids” The Archies on “The Archie Show” and The Beatles on the television program of the same name.
  • Tip-toe, walk, run, and sprint cycles should all be recycled from “Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!”.
  • Mystery Inc.’s entrances should be similar to the entrances of the Save-Ums when the Save-Um Screen goes off:
    • Fred Jones descending on fireman’s pole from his room.
      • “Sounds like the Commissioner’s calling us!”
    • Daphne Blake gymnastically coming out of a trap door.
      • “Up and about for more action!”
    • Velma Dinkley emerging from the elevator from her office on a scooter.
      • “Time for a new mission!”
    • Shaggy Rogers descending through a zipline.
      • “Another day, another monster to catch. What’s next?”
    • Scooby-Doo emerging from his doghouse on a slide.
      • “Scooby-Dooby-Doo! I love the sound of that call!"
  • The location destination transition should also be recycled from “The Save-Ums”, showing flags that represent each country or state.
  • The ending credits sequence should be similar to the one from a TV show, “The Real Ghostbusters”, where the heroes parade on the streets rained with confetti while being greeted with cheers by the townsfolk.
  • It should obviously parody a 1960s television show, “Batman”, inspired by two other TV programs, “Totally Spies” and “Martin Mystery”.
